Intelligent Group Package Tours Meet Passenger Needs

In recent years, the package tour industry has fostered a dependency on technology for its operational and strategic management. However, the existing tools for facilitating searches of availability of package tours do not provide intelligent matching between offered package tours and the personal requirements of the travellers.

I designed an intelligent web portal to serve as service provider in tasks related with package tours. This portal aims at helping people living in Europe to find package tours that match their personal travel preferences. For this purpose, the knowledge of the package tour domain has been represented by means of ontology. Additionally, the ontological component allows for defining an ontology-guided search engine, which provides more intelligent matches between package tours offers and travelling preferences.

Airlines meet ontologies

As airports become stretched to capacity and calls mount for new runways and terminals, a computer scientist in Greece has designed a system that could ensure as many seats as possible are filled on each flight and no one is left stranded at check-in.  If you’re one of those people who has logged numerous free miles giving up your seat and getting a free ticket in return, that could be bad news.

Dimitris Kanellopoulos of the Technological Educational Institute of Patras, explains how in recent years, the airline industry has become increasingly dependent on computers for its operational and strategic management. However, the current software tools it uses to match passengers to available seats on flights, is outmoded and inefficient. One of the main problems is that the software simply does not understand the passengers’ requirements.

Inspired by earlier work on an employer-employee matching system developed by researchers in Spain, Kanellopoulos is working on an intelligent web portal that will act as a service provider for the airline industry.

The portal will help people living in Europe to find airline seats that match their personal travelling preferences by locking on to the meaning of the keywords with which they describe themselves and their travel needs. For instance, whether they require a shorter than standard check-in time, wheelchair access, frequent-flyer rewards, and to arrive in Paris for a meeting before 3pm of Tuesday next week and whether they have a preference for a no-frills carrier.

This kind of semantic information is then matched against a knowledge database provided by the airlines that represents all the possible options available in terms of time of flights, seating, eating, and check-in arrangements, and other variables.

The knowledge database, works with a special conceptual model known as an “airlines ontology”. The model endows the web portal with the necessary understanding of what each passenger requires. According to Kanellopoulos, it extends recent developments in web searching that has allowed travellers to search for seats on different airlines and to hook up their flight to car rental, hotel reservation, vacation packages and other travel products.

In related work, Kanellopoulos has extended the web portal approach to package holiday arrangements.

Destination Management Systems and the LA_DMS Project

Destination Management Systems (DMS) is a perfect application area for semantic Web and peer to peer (P2P) technologies since tourism information dissemination and exchange are the key-backbones of tourism destination management.

DMS should take advantage of P2P technologies and semantic web services, interoperability, ontologies and semantic annotation. RDF-based P2P networks allow complex and extendable descriptions of resources instead of fixed and limited ones, and they providequery facilities against these metadata instead of simple keyword-based searches. The layered adaptive semantic-based DMS (LA_DMS) project aims at providing semantic-based tourism destination information by combining the P2P paradigm with semantic Web technologies.  The LA_DMS model is adaptive to the user’s personalization requirements (e.g. information concerning transportation, restaurants, accommodation, etc.) and it is a collection of opinions supported by different sources of tourism destination information. In the LA_DMS framework, the semantic models of different peers (DMOs) are being aligned dynamically.The LA_DMS model encodes semantic tourism destination information in an RDF-based P2P network architecture. The model combines ontological structures with information for tourism destinations and peers.

People can track ferries online and plan their trip better

The application marinetraffic.com demonstrates the positioning of all ships on the Greek Seas. The traffic information is live and dynamic and can allow fleet tracking live. Thus, people can track ferries online and plan their trip better.

Re-engineering of eTourism possibly will be based on geo-tagging of information and live reports for dynamic information.

Who-s-Web is a brilliant example of location based services, where web developers, web designers, etc can demonstrate their skills on a location based basis and also to include events and meetings. Besides, local networks can be formed easily.

New era in localisation of hotel websites

There is a new era in localisation of hotel websites. 10 years after the general companies, the hotel industry is start realising that consumers need a hotel website to be culturally sensitive. Localising hotel websites involves enchancing the site to fit the target users at different locales.
Lituchy and Barra examined how international differences affect website design, implementation and usage. It is worth mentioning that they analysed ailines and hotel websites and discussed theoretical and practical implications including language translators, currency converters and pull-down fields… For more information you may read:

Special Issue on: “Personalisation of Multimedia-based Destination Management Systems”

Nowadays, the widespread adoption of multimedia computing, the deployment of destination management systems (DMS) and the growing availability of ontology-based portals in the tourism industry have converged to gradually increase the range and complexity of multimedia content delivery services for tourist purposes. Basic multimedia applications for tourism are already available, and more complex semantic-based services are under development or expected to be launched soon, among which are the services of intelligent DMS.

These developments open a challenging issue: the problem of personalistion of such services. This problem implies the adaptation of the tourism information content to the technical environment of the users (device and network type) and to their individual preferences providing personalised assistance for selecting and locating interesting aspects of tourism products/services (e.g. hotels availability, travelling routes, characteristics of tourist attractions, etc., among a great number of proposed services). This special issue is intended to foster state-of-the-art research contribution to all research areas either directly applying or contributing to solving the issues related to multimedia personalisation of destination management systems.
